Don’t let Emotions Guide Investment Decisions – Building long-term wealth often requires counter-emotional investment decisions, such as buying in times of pessimism, or resisting the euphoria around investments that have recently outperformed.
Be Patient – Short term performance and volatility is impacted by many factors, including trends and sentiment. Over the long-term however, the true underlying value of a company/investment is likely to be acknowledged and valued by the wider market based primarily upon its fundamental performance.
Don’t Attempt to Time the Market – A volatile market can cause emotional investors to panic and, in some cases, abandon long term investment strategies by pulling out of the market with the intention of moving back in when the environment improves. History shows it is impossible to predict when markets will improve and by attempting to do so, investors risk missing the returns they could have earned had they retained a long-term view and held the asset.
